Citizens Academy
The Citizens Academy is a partnership between the Office of the Sheriff and the citizens of the County. This cooperation allows for more transparency of day-to-day operations and grants candidates an opportunity to get more involved in their community. Individuals interested in volunteering are first screened for initial eligibility determination, and after being selected, they are allowed entry into the 12-week Citizens Academy. This specific program is open to citizens who live and/or work in Franklin County, as well as family members of employees of the County.
Citizens Academy Program
The 12-week Citizens Academy Program meets one evening per week and consists of classroom and hands-on instruction. Attendees are taught various law enforcement subjects including:
- Crime Scene Management
- Criminal Investigations
- Internal Affairs
- Patrol Operations
- Special Operations
- Tactical Operations
In addition to classroom lecture, attendees are partnered with a road certified patrol deputy for more hands-on instruction.
Citizens on Patrol Service (COPS)
Several of the Citizens Academy Alumni have elected to receive an additional six weeks of follow-up training to go on and participate in the Citizens on Patrol Service (COPS). These individuals are instrumental in providing additional services to the community such as:
- Perform commercial and residential checks
- Help with traffic management
- Render first aid when necessary
- Provide funeral escorts
- Attend community social events
- Perform community patrol services throughout the County
