SHERIFF WARNS ABOUT PHONE SCAM IN THE PAST FEW DAYS

phone scam 01

The Office of the Sheriff is looking into several cases of phone scams where the caller claims to be a member of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
The caller attempts to extort money by telling the resident things such as; the resident has missed jury duty, there are outstanding warrants pertaining to court fines, they are trying to raise money and other statements trying to secure money.
Sheriff Bill Overton said today, "Our deputies have taken several complaints in the last few days concerning these type calls. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office does not call and ask residents to rectify issues by sending us money. If you receive a call like this, please hang up and call us. We are currently working several of these type cases to see if their origin is local. The best way to stop a scammer is just hang the phone up.”
If you have received this type call recently or feel you have been a victim, please call 540-483-3000.
